How to Locate Your Honda Engine Details

Introduction

Correctly identifying your Honda engine model details is essential when ordering spare parts, locating service kits, checking maintenance diagrams, or troubleshooting your machine. Honda engines power a huge range of equipment — from lawnmowers and generators to pressure washers and water pumps — and each engine has unique identification numbers that specify exactly which parts and accessories it requires.

This guide explains where to find your Honda engine model information, what each number means, and how to use them to ensure you purchase the correct parts every time.

Why Honda Engine Identification Matters

Honda manufactures a wide range of small engines, including:

  • Lawn mower engines
  • Ride‑on mower engines
  • Generator engines
  • Water pump engines
  • Tiller and cultivator engines
  • General-purpose GX‑series engines

Although many engines look similar, key components such as carburettors, air filters, ignition parts, and service kits can vary significantly between engine versions.

With the correct identification details, you can:

  • Order exact matching spare parts
  • Select the correct service kit
  • Find accurate engine diagrams
  • Choose the right air filter, spark plug, carburettor, and gaskets
  • Access the correct maintenance manual
  • Avoid returns, incorrect parts, and machine downtime

Understanding Honda Engine Identification Numbers

A Honda engine is typically identified by two key pieces of information:

1. Engine Model (e.g., GX160, GCV170, GXV390, GC135)

This refers to the engine series and general design. It helps identify the main engine family.

2. Engine Serial Number / PIN Code

This number is unique to your engine and provides additional details such as:

  • Engine version
  • Configuration
  • Manufacturing batch
  • Specific part compatibility

These two pieces of information together ensure you always get the right parts for your exact Honda engine.

Where to Find Your Honda Engine Model & Serial Number

Honda places identification numbers directly on the engine, usually on a metal plate or stamped into the engine body. Locations vary slightly depending on the engine type.

1. On the Engine Block (Most Common Location)

Most Honda engines display the model name clearly on a sticker or engraved plate on the engine cover.
Look for something like:
GCV160, GX120, GX200, GXV530, etc.

The serial number is usually stamped into the metal on the engine block, often below the model name.

2. On the Recoil Starter Housing (Pull‑Start Models)

For many Honda engines with manual recoil starters, the serial number is stamped or printed near the starter assembly.

Check:

  • Around the edge of the recoil housing
  • On a flat area near the starter mechanism

3. On the Valve Cover (OHV Engines)

Some overhead‑valve engines (such as GXV and GX series) have the identification label or stamping on the valve cover, which is the metal plate near the top of the engine.

4. On a Metal Identification Plate

Certain models include a dedicated Honda ID plate attached with rivets. This plate will show both:

  • Engine model
  • Type code / serial number

Examples of Honda Engine Identification Formats

Honda ID numbers usually appear as:

GCV160 – Serial: GJAAA‑1234567
or
GX200 – Type Code: QX2 – Serial: 1234567

Record all numbers exactly as shown — this ensures the correct part match.

Tips for Locating Hard‑to‑See Numbers

If the numbers are faint or obscured:

  • Clean the area with a cloth to remove grass, dirt, or oil
  • Use a torch to view recessed or shadowed areas
  • Look from different angles to catch the light on stamped metal
  • Avoid scratching or damaging the ID plate

If you still cannot find the numbers, take clear photos of the engine and surrounding components — this may help a parts specialist identify it.

What to Do Once You Have Your Honda Engine Details

Once you have the model and serial/type number, you can:

  • Search for genuine Honda engine parts
  • Select the correct service kit
  • Access exploded diagrams for precise part identification
  • Order air filters, spark plugs, carburettors, fuel pipes, gaskets, and more

These details make ordering parts fast, accurate, and stress‑free.

Where to locate your Honda Engine details

Model Number

You will find the model number on a sticker located on the engine cover or recoil. Honda engine model numbers start with the letter G, for example G100, GX690, or GCV160. This is the base engine model.

Engine Type Code and Serial Number

You will find the Engine Type Code stamped into the side of the engine, close to the serial number. Engine type codes may be up to 4 characters. If a code is less than 4 characters, you may see asterisks as placeholders (i.e. an engine stamped with QX** is a QX type engine.)

The PIN and serial numbers are combined and consist of 4 or 5 letters, followed by 7 numbers.
